Jerry has now been reunited with his parents, the late Tillie Cohen Sherman and Abraham Sherman, and late siblings, Annette “Honey” Sherman Yackolow, John “Jay” Emanual, Robert “Bob” Joseph, Morton “Mort”, Wilfred ‘Bill’ and their adoring spouses.
Jerry leaves behind his precious daughter, Mikelle Beth of Leesburg, VA and her fiancé/partner, John C. Smith. He was immensely proud of his daughter, beaming with delight about her many accomplishments and happy to share her business card with anyone. He loved to chat with her about her job, the hotel business, his discounted family rates and her travels and experiences. It always made him smile and chuckle. She was the light of his life.
Jerry also leaves behind, his wonderful nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nephews.
Jerry came as a surprise to his parents on March 2, 1938, as their youngest son at that time, was already nine. Born and educated in Boston’s West End, Jerry attended Boston University, playing on the football team, a distinction never revealed to his adoring Mother. He was in the service, became a private pilot, jumped out of an airplane with a parachute (once) and otherwise kept his feet on the ground.
Jerry spent his working life in the family businesses alongside his brothers: Sherbros, Luggage Distributors and Sherman’s in downtown Boston. Jerry was the major appliance and electronics buyer. His sales volume got him noticed and he was consistently invited to the big company incentive trips for best in sales. In between working in the family business, he ventured out on his own for a few years after being invited to become Vice President, Research and Development for Toshiba.
When living in Stoughton, MA, Jerry was an active member of the Knights of Pythias, serving as President for a term. He loved the camaraderie and the brotherhood of the members and participated in the meetings and planned events including Mystery trips, Halloween and holiday parties and the pomp and circumstance of the lodge.
With his colorful socks coordinated with custom shirts embroidered with his name, Jerry enjoyed life after retirement by planning vacations, traveling, playing Mexican Train and attending North Shore Music Theater, movies and concerts. He embraced Sandy’s son, Bryan, and his family (Mandy, Willow and Chandler) as his own along with Yuko whom he and Sandy met in Japan and who became their shared ‘daughter’. He cared passionately about keeping democracy alive and was an early adopter of women’s rights. CNN and Hallmark were his television choices as well as his regular evening appointment with Sandy to watch something streaming once Covid closed public theaters. It was a habit they continued after his move to the Residence. Jerry and Sandy met in 2004 and shared a life together until his passing. Although he was the chef, they enjoyed nightly forays to restaurants all around the region, some of which had Jerry’s favorite drink (diet coke with lots of limes) at the table before he was seated. Jerry’s warmth and generosity was his hallmark. He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
