Harold Smith

Harold Smith of Peabody, entered into rest on Friday, August 28, 2026 at the age of 89. Beloved husband of Susan (Arkin) Smith. Devoted father of Deborah Smith of Peabody and Michael Smith and his wife Susan of Westborough. Cherished grandfather of Aaron and Shayna Smith. Loving brother of Vernon Smith of Framingham and Larry Smith of Maine. Dear son of the late Max and Ida (Cohen) Smith.

Harold grew up in Peabody, graduating in 1954 from Peabody High School where he played trumpet in a school jazz band with friends. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Guatanamo Bay, Cuba where he worked as an aircraft electrician. Honorably discharged in 1957, he attended Northeastern University where he graduated with highest honors (top 5% of his class) in Accounting in 1962.

He worked as an internal auditor for companies in both Corning, NY and Raleigh, NC. After marrying Susan Arkin in 1964, they moved back to settle in West Peabody, MA. Harold had a long career as an accountant, working for many years at such corporations as Honeywell, Corning Glass Works, and Underwood Foods among others. He continued to work as a part-time accountant up until the age of 77 before finally retiring in 2015.

Harold volunteered for many years as both Treasurer and Vice President of Temple Ner Tamid in Peabody and was also a member of the Ancient Order of Free and Accepted Masons. An avid photographer and reader of spy novels, he was also a fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. He and Susan celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in July. A devoted grandfather to Shayna and Aaron, Harold loved attending their many school and extracurricular activities. He was well known for his kind personality and sense of humor and always had a joke ready to tell. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Maple Hill Cemetery, 98 Canterbury Drive, Peabody. A Meal of Consolation will be held following the service at Temple Ner Tamid, 368 Lowell Street, Peabody until 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Harold’s memory to the National Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choice.
