Harold Velleman

Harold E. Velleman was born in Malden, Massachusetts on April 4, 1923 and graduated from Malden High School in 1942. He was the son of Minnie Silverstein and Louis Velleman and lived in Malden, Swampscott and Peabody and for his final years in the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Sally Finn Velleman and is survived by Natalie Needleman Breitman Velleman, with whom he enjoyed 40 years of marriage. Harold was the youngest and surviving of his three siblings: Nathan Velleman, Evelyn Schwartz and Mildred Wool. Harold is also survived by his five children Dr. Barry Velleman, Alan Breitman and his wife Pamela, Karen Byers and her husband Harry, Neal Breitman and his wife Maggie, and Phyllis Breitman and her husband Dan Gingras. Harold is also survived by 6 grandchildren David Velleman, Leigh Breitman Hurd and her husband Doug, Michelle Breitman Hipwood and her husband Charles, Robin Breitman and her husband Graham Wilson, William Byers and his wife Marissa, Stephen Byers and his wife Allison. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren: Braden, Sienna & Grayson Hurd, Zoey & Cameron Hipwood and Zachary Byers. For many years, earlier in his career Harold worked at SW Dental Laboratory in Revere as a dental technician. Harold was an adjunct professor at Harvard University School’s of Dentistry in the mid to late 60’s. Harold’s most significant achievements in his career came as a dental technician in 1966 when, as an adjunct clinical professor at Harvard University’s school of Dentistry, the graduating class awarded him numerous accolades through Dr. Larry Gettleman, class President. He was appointed by the entire class as a member of the class of 1966 then Dean Paul Goldhaber awarded Harold “Faculty Status” at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. This was particularly remarkable for Harold as he had no formal schooling beyond Malden High School. Later, Harold received accolades from the Dentists of New England and the Dental Laboratory Association of New England as the outstanding Technician in New England. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Jewish Nursing Home at 17 Lafeyette Avenue, Chelsea, MA 02150. Services will be held on Sunday, March 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the Stanetsky-Hmanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem (Swampscott line). Services will be concluded with a burial at Congregation Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Temple Israel Section, Peabody. Shiva will be held immediately following at the Clubhouse at 14 Ledgewood Way, Peabody, MA.

I only new Harold and Sally for a brief time when I first Lived in Malden soon after my marriage. However Ruth and I had a great relationship with them as they were great people to be with as well as having the first TV in the neighborhood. My sincere condolences to the family.
