Helen Kaliner Caplan, 90, of Bloomfield, CT, formerly of Andover, died Thursday evening March 18, 2021 at Caleb Hitchcock Health Center in Bloomfield, CT.
Born and raised in New York City, Mrs. Caplan graduated from Hunter College with B.A. and M.A. degrees in education. She taught elementary school in Great Neck, New York and Norwalk, Connecticut before marrying the late Harry B. Caplan. The couple settled in Andover, Massachusetts where she taught elementary school and middle school and specialized in gifted programming, and was a member of Temple Emanuel. After retiring, she moved with her husband to Boynton Beach, Florida where she volunteered for SeniorNet at Bethesda Memorial Hospital. Following her husband's passing, she moved to the Duncaster Retirement Community in Bloomfield, CT where she was an active resident who served as a delegate to the residents' council, chaired the golf association, volunteered for the annual golf fundraiser, and was a leading member of the artisans' group. Her paintings and needlecraft were exhibited at a local cafe and in the Duncaster Art Gallery.
Mrs. Caplan was the devoted wife of the late Harry Bernard Caplan. She is the beloved mother of Paula, and Sheri & her husband Kenneth Merkatz, and the adored grandmother of Danyel, Emanuel, Clarisa, and Samuel, as well as the loving sister of Jerome Kaliner.
ARRANGEMENTS: Due to the pandemic, a private service will be held at Temple Emanuel Cemetery in Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Temple Emanuel, 7 Haggetts Pond Road, Andover, MA 01810.

Mrs. Caplan was my teacher at West Elementary in Andover, some 40 years ago. I still remember her and the lessons she taught me. She was a dignified and caring soul. I am truly lucky for having known her. Godspeed, Mrs. C.
