PEABODY – Dr. Irving B. Goldston died on August 27, 2016. Born in Boston, MA on May 13, 1919, he was raised in Revere, MA, where he graduated from local schools. He later attended the University of Iowa where he earned a Doctor of Dental Science in December 1942. Immediately thereafter, he entered the Army Air Corps where he went overseas during World War II and served as a dentist earning the rank of Captain. Upon his return in August 1946 as a decorated war veteran, he set up his dental practice and soon married the former Bella Madow of Chelsea and moved to Swampscott. He lived there for more than 50 years and practiced dentistry in Marblehead until he retired at the age of 80 to care for his then ailing wife. Dentistry was an important part of his life – a profession he enjoyed so much that he tutored students at Tufts University dentistry school on a monthly basis for many years. Fishing out of Salem and Marblehead harbors with his two daughters, family and friends and going to the Marblehead “Y” filled many leisure hours.
In 2001, he moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody. Five years after the death of his wife, he was fortunate to find love once more with Cynthia Ferratusco, and married her in 2008 when he was 89. A man who cherished family, Irving was able to spend his last years in a loving relationship with a woman who not only cared for him, but brought her large family into the fold granting him an abundance of love and companionship.
From the time he was young, Irving was an accomplished jazz pianist with little formal training playing music “by ear”. He used this talent to earn his way through college and achieve his dental degree. He would often sit at his piano at home and entertain. Even as he got older and his physical condition limited his ability to play the piano, he taught himself drums which he played while Cynthia sang with the “Brooksby Irregulars”.
In addition to his wife Cynthia, Irving is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Allen “Auwe” Heiser of Waialua, HI; and daughter, Terry Kneeland and John Neidozetko of Enfield, NH. Survivors also include sister-in-law, Ruth Granoff; numerous nieces and nephews, including Mark Granoff, with whom he had a special “son like” relationship; stepchildren, Dawn Sampson, Kim and Earl Lloyd, Vincent Ferratusco, and Vance and Martha Ferratusco; and numerous grandchildren and great -grandchcildren. Irving is preceded in death by his first wife, Bella, and two brothers, Melvin and Lester.
