Jack M. Fischer, 77, of Swampscott, MA entered into rest on March 26, surrounded by his loving family. Jack grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from MIT with a degree in management in 1959. He proudly wore the red jacket, signifying a 50 plus year graduate. After graduation, Jack became an officer in the US Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. There he met his future wife, the former Margaret Griffin, and together they forged a life based on mutual respect, connection to others, and laughter. They lived in Fayetteville, NC, Pittsburgh, and suburban Philadelphia, before moving to Swampscott in 1976.
While starting his career in Pittsburgh's steel industry, Jack earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to jobs in corporate management with Reliance Steel, Belmont Industries, Walbar, Inc., and Copley Controls. He was involved in extensive volunteer activities in the North Shore Jewish community, at Temple Emanuel, the Jewish Federation of the North Shore, Kernwood Country Club, MIT Hillel, and with the Town of Swampscott Capital Improvements Committee.
Jack was a passionate golfer, boater, and fisherman. He enjoyed domestic and international travel. He enjoyed Pitt basketball, and the Red Sox, where he had a share of season tickets for many years. At the core of his life were his relationships with family and friends, and he was a masterful connector of people. As it is said, "he never knew a stranger". His life was completed when he became a grandfather in 2008.
Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Margaret, their children: Janet of Swampscott, Samuel of Salem, Douglas and his wife Stephanie of Marblehead, and his granddaughter Angie. He is survived by his brother, Ted Fischer, and his wife Joan of Gainesville, FL, his mother-in-law Libby Griffin, his brother-in-law Dr. Stanley Griffin (Faye), his sisters-in-law Linda Jo Lucas, Faye Griffin, Judy Griffin Culler, and Charlotte Griffin, and 14 cherished nieces and nephews on the Fischer and Griffin sides. He is predeceased by his parents Samuel and Beatrice Fischer, his nephew Steven Fischer, his in-laws Grover and Mary Griffin, and his brothers-in-law, Grover, Jr., Johnny, Robert and Neal Griffin.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of one's choice. Jack's funeral service will be held on Monday, March 30, at 11:30 am at Temple Emanuel in Marblehead. We will continue to celebrate Jack's life with Shiva on Tuesday, March 31, 4-8 pm at the Vantage Pointe Apartments Clubhouse in Swampscott.
