Janet Lee Parkinson

Passed away on August 1, 2021

Janet L. Parkinson (née Ossoff) of Portsmouth, NH, formerly of Swampscott, MA, passed from this life peacefully on August 1, 2021. Janet was the cherished mother of Jordan Parkinson of Beverly, MA, stepmother to Sara Gibbons of Boise, ID, and devoted daughter of Melvin and Stella Ossoff. She found joy in daily runs (and always enjoyed a coffee after), and was an avid participant in road races, completing over 30 marathons, including 20 Boston Marathons. She shared her love of running with others by coaching cross country and track for Portsmouth and Greenland Middle Schools. Janet was a devoted and loyal friend who took great pride in maintaining more multi-decade friendships than can be counted. She showed up impeccably dressed for every event- unless she was planning on running another 5 miles later that day! She had an incredible memory and took great pleasure in sharing stories about her son, Jordan, who was her pride and joy. The family will hold a private service for Janet, and she will be interred at Maple Hill Cemetery in Peabody, MA; a celebration of her life will be hosted later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Portsmouth Rotary Club in memory of Janet Ossoff Parkinson. She will be sorely missed and forever loved- but we know she took a right on Hereford and a left on Boylston on her way to eternal rest.

Jordan, so sorry to hear this sad news. Whenever I happened to see your mother, yes she told me about her latest running adventure, but mostly we talked about you. Whether it was in third grade, middle school, high school, or college, she happily gave me updates of your successes. She was extremely proud of all your accomplishments, Jordan. Always remember that you were her pride and joy. She would be happy to know that you will continue running in her honor.

Janet was a warm loving woman. She welcomed our daughter Kendra into her Bow Lake home during Covid and made her feel so special. We had the pleasure of meeting for the engagement night. It was an instant connection and we shared so many beautiful stories. Her love of Jordan was so glowing, her accomplishments with running and life friendships were inspiring. We had so many plans for this special wedding and I will miss getting to know her and share the experience. Rest in Peace, Janet, and please know Jordan is the son we always wanted and will take loving care of him.

I still can't believe Janet has passed. It's true that she had more friends than anyone I've ever known. That's because she was such a good friend herself. She was welcoming to all and was kind and thoughtful. Janet lived life to the fullest, always open to experiencing new things. I also loved her ability to laugh at herself. There are so many "Janet" stories and she was always laughing harder than anyone else. I will miss her so much.

I met Janet 28 years ago shortly after my first son was born. At a charity event - in walks a glamorous, super athlete woman - wearing snake patterned pleather pants! Through our mutual friend Nancy Clayburgh, we were introduced and immediately bonded over running, coffee, the North Shore etc. Many of may favorite memories involve Janet - either at Bow Lake or New Year’s Eve hilarious times. She was a friend to all. An amazing mother to Jordy and a doting daughter. She coached hundreds of children how to run competitively and was kind to all. Janet was wonderful to my family and we love her and miss her.

I am so sorry for your loss. My condolences go out to Jordan and the family. Janet was certainly dedicated to the sport of running for herself and anyone that wanted to improve their own running experience. Her family and friends meant the world to her. Her stories and energy will be missed.

Condolences to Janet's family. She was our grandson Jonathan's coach at Portsmouth Middle School and followed his High School track career (when he ran with Jordy). She also loved to hear stories of his X- country career at RIT and his after graduation career and family growth. Most of these talks took place at the Golden Egg. She will definitely be missed. Her's was a great presence.

I am so saddened to hear of Janet’s death. In college, we were roommates and good friends. I remember her nicknames, “Janeto” and “Kodak” ( she was taking pictures constantly ). After college we socialized with and without our new babies.
My heart goes out to her son, stepdaughter and her family.
