Julie was the beloved wife of the late Howard Kaplan. She was the cherished mother of Emily R. Kaplan of Beverly, Massachusetts and Jenny Ha (James Lee) of Seoul, South Korea, and the loving grandmother of Stella Lee of South Korea. Julie was the devoted sister of Shelly A. Waldman and sister-in-law of the late James W. Sullivan.
Julie’s parents were the late Thelma R. Waldman (Levene) and Edward Waldman of Beverly, Massachusetts.
Julie grew up in Beverly, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Beverly High School. She continued her education at North Shore Community College, where she earned her Associate’s degree and Salem State College, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
For a period of time after college, Julie lived and worked in California as a Medical Secretary. When Julie returned to Massachusetts, she worked as a Medical Secretary in hospital and private practice settings.
When Eastern Airlines opened its Boston, Massachusetts reservations facility in the late 1970s, Julie was both a reservations agent and an administrative support professional. When she and Howard relocated to Rochester, New York in early 1989, Julie was given the opportunity to continue her employment with Eastern in New York for about a year. During Julie and Howard’s time in Rochester, New York they were blessed with their daughter, Emily Rose, who was born in South Korea and came home to live with them on October 11, 1989 (Airplane Day! Emily’s adoption was finalized in April of 1990.
After Howard’s sudden death in 1990, Julie and Emily moved home to Massachusetts, where Julie raised Emily. This was the most important role of Julie’s life. She held a part-time position at one of the schools that Emily attended, giving Julie time with Emily after school ended for the day!
Julie loved to make quilts – her talent was astounding! She also loved to dance. In her 60s, she decided that it was time to enroll in tap and ballet classes and she enjoyed every second!
How to describe Julie? Dedicated to her family, loyal to her many friends, loved life, happy, funny, loved to laugh (and her laugh was a hearty and contagious one). And those words do not fully capture who Julie was.
Julie is also survived by and loved her sisters-in-law Joyce Kaplan (Chuck Young), Lynda Salvanelli (John) and Tina DiPaolo (Joseph), her nephews Scott Mayo (Jennifer), Shane Salvanelli and Casey DiPaolo (Kate), her great-nephew, Jackson Mayo and many cousins and friends.
