Lorraine (Winitz) Probst passed away with loving family at her side, at the age of 90, on August 18, 2023. Lori was married for 66 years to her loving and beloved husband Calvin Probst. She was a wonderfully loving and beloved mother to Cynthia (Cindy) Pearce-Probst, Stephen Probst and Melissa Kenny Probst. She was a loving and beloved mother-in-law to Sue, Helen and J.Barr; loving and beloved grandmother to Adam, Michael, Becki, Sara, Julie, Murphy and Max; loving and beloved grandmother-in-law to Samantha, Kahdeem, and Prabhat; and delighted and loving great-grandmother to Asher.
Lori was a loving and beloved daughter to the late Joseph Winitz and Lottie (Wesil) Winitz; loving and beloved sister to the late Gloria Lauterbach and Pauline Wiener. She was predeceased by her dear nephews Eddie and David. She leaves behind her dear nieces and their families.
Everyone in Lori's family knew what it meant to be treasured, for having been on the receiving end of her affection. She cherished her roles as daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Lori nurtured friendships that were sustained over many decades, most notably with Ruth (Lauterbach) Hutter, with whom she shared 86 years of friendship.
Lori grew up in Yonkers, NY, and lived there for the first half of her life. Her Yonkers connections were always held close to her heart. She and Cal later settled in suburban Philadelphia for many years, before eventually moving to Massachusetts.
Lori was graduated from Syracuse University, and then Columbia Teacher's College. She was a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL), and embraced being in a supportive role to students who were often refugees. For a number of years she worked especially with immigrants from Southeast Asia, and from Russia. She particularly valued helping to facilitate their adjustment to life in the U.S. She enjoyed being a contributing member of her community overall, including serving as a hospice volunteer.
Lori was exceptionally empathic and kind. Her heartfelt respect, for everyone she encountered, invited an uncommon experience of sharing and connectedness.
A private memorial service was held on August 20. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to One Sky for All Children (https://onesky.org/).
