Born in Salem, MA, Louie was a 1945 graduate of Salem H.S. He attended Northeastern University in Boston but left in the middle of his sophomore year when he was drafted and signed a major league contract with the Boston Red Sox. He went on to play for the Red Sox minor league teams in Baxley, GA and Mooresville, NC. He left the Red Sox to continue his studies at Boston University and to join the US Naval Reserve and, while there, enrolled in the US Navy officer training program. He was later assigned to the USS Macomb, a naval destroyer originally based in Charleston, SC. He served on the USS Macomb for the following two years during its deployment in the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1954 with the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade).
Upon his discharge, Louie married Faith Hurwitz and settled in Hamilton, MA and then Swampscott, MA, where they lived for over 30 years. He joined his brothers Paul and Sam at Waterlac Industries in Danvers, MA, an industrial paint and finish company. For the next 25 years, Louie was on the road as Vice President and Director of Sales. After retiring from Waterlac, he continued his career in various business pursuits, including sales for Camger Paint Co. of Cranston, RI.
An accomplished athlete and artist, Louie pursued his passions for golf and painting for most of his adult life. He was an active member of Kernwood Country Club in Salem, MA, winning many competitive tournaments over his 40 years there, and then at Hollybrook Golf and Tennis Club in Pembroke Pines, FL, where Faith and he had retired after leaving the North Shore. In addition, he continued to paint well into his early 90’s and had numerous shows in Florida and New England. His work is represented by the Gingerbread Square Gallery in Key West, FL, as well as in the homes of many dear friends and family.
