He was born May 16, 1942 in Lynn Massachusetts to Nellie (Herman) and Phillip Butman, and a loving brother to his sister Alphe.
In his retirement years, Melvin was an engaged and dedicated member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club, as a board member and 2021 Paul Harris Award recipient. He lived the motto “service before self” and was always available to help and bring his humor and smile to many events.
Whether one knew him well or not, he loved everyone. He exuded an air of calm resilience through good and bad, and always cherished time with family and friends.
He leaves his daughter Joanne (Bill) Cartwright, grandchildren Caitlin (Charlie) Johnson, Cassidy Brown and Charles (Lucky) Cartwright, great grandchildren Charlie Augustus Johnson and Idrees Charles Cartwright, sister Alphe Pearl and her children Judy (Robert) Jay, Debbie Eikrem, Nancy Stevens and Phyllis (Iain) Pearl-Baxter, and former spouse Nancy Butman Gahm. He also leaves his longtime companion Jean Briggs and the Kennebunk ‘family’ who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents, daughter Eileen Brown and niece Robin Pearl.
A funeral service for Melvin will be held on Wednesday October 9th, 2024 at 10 AM at the Congregation Shirat Hayam, Temple Israel Cemetery.
