I can’t imagine how difficult the last few months have been for you and your family. When Maryanne and I heard about Ron’s diagnosis we were truly devastated.  From the time I first met Ron I knew that he was more than just another guy to share  a few hours on a golf course and have lunch with. He was one of the few people that I could sit down with, share a muffin and have a real conversation.  We enjoyed discussing the rapid advances of science and technology, our professions, and our students. There was always some reference to our children and grandchildren. On occasion there were some topics where we had some disagreements but that never interfered with our friendship. I will truly miss those conversations I already do. I know you will always have the support and love of your family, but Maryanne and I will always be there for you.

Dear Dr. Nevins,

Thank you very much for everything you have done for me over the years. I truly believe that without you, I would not be who I am today. My career as a dentist, once filled with uncertainty and struggle in periodontal treatment, began to flourish when I faithfully put into practice what you taught me.

Based on those teachings, I was honored to receive your permission to establish an institute, and I founded JIADS (Japan Institute for Advanced Dental Studies). With your continued support and guidance, JIADS has been able to continue for 35 years. As a result, many dentists who have completed our programs have gone on to become members of the Japanese Society of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology.

Since 2000, all four Japanese presenters in the clinical category of the AAP General Session have been lecturers from JIADS, and can be considered your academic “grandstudents.” This, I believe, demonstrates that Dr. Nevins’ concepts are truly scientific, producing consistent results regardless of who applies them.

I will continue to pass on your teachings to the next generation and pursue the longevity of natural teeth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dr. Nevins is quite fond of sushi, so much so that during a four-day stay in Japan, he had sushi for eight out of twelve meals. 
He seems to particularly enjoy tuna sushi.

Dr. Myron Nevins shared his final lecture at Harvard Periodontology earlier this summer surrounded by students, colleagues and friends, as he continues to inspire those around him with his passion, wisdom and care. Per Dr. Nevins’s, this memory was particularly special as his granddaughter Lizzy joined him in class, and I will never forget the joy Dr. Nevins’s shared as he continues to inspire the next generation. 

We will forever remember him and honor his legacy.

Dr. Myron Nevins was so much more than an icon in our field. He was a guiding teacher, a source of inspiration, and a cornerstone of our periodontology community at Harvard and beyond. All of us have memories with Dr. Nevins that we will treasure whether it is in class and seminars, reading his scientific articles, learning from him in clinic and on the podium, and sharing great stories in our community gatherings.

For more than three decades, since 1992, Dr. Nevins shaped the lives and careers of countless residents and faculty at Harvard through his wisdom, generosity, and tireless commitment to excellence. Whether in the clinic, at lectures, or at conferences, he embodied the best of what it means to be a teacher, master clinician, and leader. His humility and curiosity made every encounter with him an opportunity to learn and grow. Beyond periodontology, he taught us about integrity, empathy, and the art of caring for others while advancing our field, and what it means to be World Class.

His pioneering work in regenerative therapy, tissue engineering, and implant dentistry revolutionized clinical periodontology, and set the standards that guide our field today. His legacy lies even more in the quiet moments: his his joy in seeing residents grow into confident clinicians and scholars, his word of encouragement during a challenging case, and his openness to share his knowledge and wisdom. He taught us to always look deeper, think critically, and care deeply.

Dr. Nevins’s influence extended far beyond HSDM. He has marked the lives and inspired many through his leadership in the American Academy of Periodontology, AAP Foundation, and American Board of Periodontology. With his four decades at the helm of the International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, he elevated our profession globally.

Dr. Nevins will forever be remembered as the teacher to all of us. Dr. Nevins will continue to live on in our hearts.

I was heartbroken to hear that Dr. Nevins has left us. Though we knew this day would come, it still feels impossible to accept.
He was not only one of the most accomplished and influential figures in periodontology, but the person who changed my father’s life forever. My father always said that meeting Dr. Nevins gave him direction, confidence, and purpose. Thanks to him, my father helped improve dentistry in Japan for the better. He admired Dr. Nevins so deeply—it was almost like worship—and carried that reverence throughout his career and into retirement.
Dr. Nevins was far more than a mentor to us. I grew up knowing him and his wonderful family; our families became lifelong friends. The warmth and generosity of the Nevins household shaped my childhood and meant even more during my early career days in Boston, when I was studying alone and often felt lonely. Your family welcomed and supported me as if I were your own, wrapping me in kindness when I needed it most. I treasure those memories and came to love and respect him just as deeply as my father did. In a way, he—and all of you—felt like an extended part of our family.

Dr. Nevins was not only a legend in dentistry but also a role model and father figure to the many students and colleagues he mentored over the course of several decades. His passion and dedication to cultivating the next generation of educators will endure, and he will be deeply missed for his genuine smile and warm sense of humor.

He challenged us to practice with true empathy and compassion for the patients entrusted to our care, and our treatment philosophy is a direct reflection of his mentorship. He took me around the world to attend meetings, deliver lectures, and conduct research, and through him, I was introduced to many individuals who became lifelong mentors and dear friends.
