

Thousand Oaks, CA - Nancy Eleanor Popkin Popkin, 83, died peacefully in Thousand Oaks, California on March 16. A native of the Greater Boston area, she led a long life of love and accomplishment. She graduated from Boston University’s School of Public Arts and Letters and took her first job in journalism with the Jewish Advocate newspaper. It was there she met Philip Popkin and soon married the man whose surname was the same as hers. Nancy continued a successful career in writing, working for many years with the Lynn Daily Evening Item and writing the noted “Personality Spotlight” column, highlighting interviews she conducted with celebrities visiting Boston ranging from Otto Preminger to Dick Cavett to Tiny Tim. She won a prestigious essay award from Women’s Wear Daily magazine, giving voice to issues of parity for women in journalism. Nancy later was a public relations director for the New England Dairy Council and ever-energetic and creative, was featured in her own television cooking program. In later years, she joined her husband Phil in his financial planning business, having obtained her Certified Financial Planning credential well into her 60s. Her energy, enthusiasm for life, and love of family and friends knew no bounds. She leaves behind a legacy of personal and professional achievements across her seven decades of residence on the North Shore of Boston. Her mother, Bess Popkin of Allston, was mother, mentor, and friend. She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Philip Popkin, who died in October of 2005. She moved to Los Angeles following her husband’s death to live near her daughter Deborah Faye Popkin Schuster of Agoura Hills, California and spent her golden years in a deep bond with Deborah, meeting new friends, participating in a stroke recovery and support group, and enjoying the new geographic terrain as if it were her own. Nancy also leaves behind her loving son Sam Popkin of Birmingham, Alabama, son-in-law Robert Schuster of Agoura Hills, daughter-in-law Susan Key of Birmingham, grandchildren Kaitlin and Cole Schuster, Kashian Key and Malachi Popkin, and innumerable friends and family primarily in the Northeast who mourn her loss but celebrate her extraordinary life. Funeral Services at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, SALEM on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 12 Noon. Interment at Temple Emanu-EL Memorial Park, Buxton Road, Danvers.
