Born in Peabody, Nathan was the son of the late Saul and Beatrice (Marsh) Tanzer. He attended Peabody Schools and was a graduate of Peabody High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, Nathan attended Boston University and graduated with his degree in Business.
Nathan went on to run the family business, Foster Leather Company in Salem. He continued as an Executive in the leather industry until his retirement in the mid-1990s. He had been a resident of Florida since 1997.
Nate was Past Commander of the Jewish War Veteran’s Council #220 of Peabody, Scout Master of Troop #97 in Peabody, President of the Maple Hill Cemetery Association and longtime Trustee of the JB Thomas Hospital in Peabody. He was also a member of the New England Tanner’s Council, the Strawberry Ridge Veteran’s Council, Congregation Sons of Israel in Peabody, the Jordan Masonic Lodge in Peabody and was a past member of Temple Beth Shalom and Temple Ner Tamid, both of Peabody. An accomplished marksman, he also was a longtime member of the Danvers Fish & Game Club for many years. He could fix anything and in his spare time, he was an avid reader and had a great love for opera and classical music. In earlier years, he was an accomplished horseman.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three children: Brad Tanzer of Stuart, FL, Russ Tanzer and his wife Laura MacPhail of South Hamilton and Amy Buckley and her husband George of Hudson, NH. He was the brother of Dr. Jason Tanzer and his wife Lois of West Hartford, CT and the late Elaine Tanzer. Cherished Grandfather to Michael and Christopher Tanzer, Evan and Norah Tanzer and Jared and Cameron Buckley, and nephew to Janice Angorn of Tampa, FL.
Graveside Services at the Maple Hill Cemetery, 98 Canterbury Dr. PEABODY on Sunday at 11:00AM. Memorial Observance immediately following the burial at the home of Russ and Laura Tanzer and continuing on Monday from 3-9PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
