Bob Harris of Peabody (formerly Swampscott) entered into rest on December 26, 2018 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of Edith (Goldrosen) for 66 years. Devoted father of Peter (Connie) Harris and Jo-Anne (Barry) Harris Nyer. Cherished grandfather of Greg (Erin) Harris, Jenna (Tim Ruggerio) Harris, Ben (Zina Alam) Nyer, Joshua Nyer, Elliot (Leslie) Nyer and Allison Nyer. Great grandfather of Zoe Harris. Brother of the late Frank Harris and Sidney Harris. Dear son of the late Abraham Harris and Etta (Aronson) Harris. Loving brother-in-law and uncle to a large extended family.
Bob was born in Salem and raised in Lynn. He graduated from Lynn Classical and was a star athlete both in high school and at the JCC of Lynn, where he became an inspiring basketball coach and mentor to the boys’ AZA youth group. Bob served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a sales representative of men's uniforms. Bob raised his family in Swampscott and was very active in the Jewish community. He served on the Board of Directors and was elected an Honorary Life Board Member at both the JCC of The North Shore and Camp Bauercrest. His connection with the JCC spanned over 75 years.
Throughout his life, Bob enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Bob also enjoyed working with his wife Edith in the antique business. In retirement, he was able to spend more time in the woodshop where he loved creating pieces from cribbage boards to furniture for his children and grandchildren.
Bob will be remembered fondly by many. He was a respected and admired friend of all who knew him.
A funeral service for Bob Harris will be held on Sunday, December 30, at 11:00 am at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem. This will be followed by the burial at Shirat Hayam cemetery in Peabody. Then there will be a reception to celebrate Bob’s life at the McIntosh Clubhouse at Brooksby Village, 301 Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody. The reception will be from 1:00-4:00 pm.
The family will sit Shiva on Monday, Dec 31 at Peter and Connie’s home in Marblehead from 2:00-6:00 pm and on Tuesday, Jan 1st at Barry and Jo-Anne’s home in Acton from 2:00-4:30 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Bob’s memory to: The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore in Marblehead; the Resident Benevolent Fund at Brooksby Village in Peabody; or Care Dimensions Hospice Services at 75 Sylvan Street in Danvers.
