Sidney was born in Malden to Joseph and Esther (Kalick) Katz but lived almost all of his life in Beverly. He graduated from Beverly High School in 1960, went on to technical school then left to join the Filenes’ buyer training program. During this time, he was introduced to Alfred Marshall, the original developer of the Marshalls’ Department stores. Sid grew up valuing hard work, determination and making the most of every opportunity. Al saw Sid’s potential and offered him a job at the main store in North Beverly. Sid worked for the growing company as a buyer/manager for many years gaining knowledge and perfecting his craft.
When the Marshalls’ stores in the United States were sold, Mr. Marshall offered Sid a partnership in the stores he planned for the Virgin Islands and St. Maarten. Sid and his family spent many happy years between Beverly and the Caribbean. Through dedication and perseverance Sid built a successful career and a life for his wife and children that reflected his values.
To those who knew him best, Sid will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. He was generous in ways both big and small, always willing to offer advice, lend a hand, or quietly help someone in need. Above all, Sid loved being “Grampy.” His grandchildren brought him immeasurable happiness and he treasured the moments spent sharing stories, making them laugh and creating memories they will carry with them forever.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ronnie-Sue (Fireman) Katz, his son, Jeffrey Katz and daughter-in-law Lisa of Colorado; his daughter Jennifer (JJ) Hano and son-in-law Charles (Chip) Hano of Beverly; his cherished grandchildren Samantha Hano and her wife Francesca D’Angelo, Zoe Hano, Jacob Hano, John Katz and Isabella Katz; his sister, Faye Hillman and brother, Seymour Katz and many beloved extended family members. Sid was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother-in-law, Steve Hillman.
Sid’s family is deeply grateful to his many caregivers and to the compassionate staff who watched over him in his final days, providing comfort, dignity and kindness when it mattered most.
A memorial service for Sidney will be held at Temple B’nai Abraham, 200 East Lothrop St., in Beverly, August 9, 2026 at 11:00 AM followed by a celebration of his life. In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated.
