

On Sunday, December 15, 2024, Betty was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Betty was born on August 18, 1941 to Karl and Elvira (Boeder) Herzog in Milwaukee, WI. Betty was baptized on September 7, 1941 and confirmed on April 3, 1955 at St. John's Lutheran Church on 68th and Forest Home Avenue in Milwaukee, WI. Betty graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran High School, Milwaukee, WI in 1959 and continued her education at Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm, MN graduating in 1962. She received an elementary education degree and taught at Siloah Lutheran School (Milwaukee, WI), St. John St. James Lutheran School, Reedsville, WI, and Zion Lutheran School, Columbus, WI. She met August Carl Gabert in Columbus and they were married on June 15, 1968 in Milwaukee, WI. Augie and Betty were blessed with three daughters: Virginia, Kathryn, and Rebecca.
The family moved to Canby, Oregon after a job change for Augie in 1981. Betty and Augie became members of Grace Lutheran Church, Portland and later Amazing Grace Lutheran Church. While the girls attended Grace Lutheran School, Betty drove many miles with the school carpool and helped in the classrooms. Betty also served her Lord by teaching Sunday School and VBS classes, helping with the Altar Guild, and supporting LWMS (Lutheran Women’s Mission Society). Betty spent countless hours volunteering at Evergreen Lutheran Thrift Store. She enjoyed helping community members find needed items and supporting Evergreen Lutheran High School (her girls’ alma mater). Betty and Augie traveled to see their grandchildren perform in school activities - always bringing along homemade cookies.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws (Tilden and Bernice Gabert), husband Augie, and daughter Rebecca. Betty is survived by daughters Virginia (Jonathan) Kehren of Johnson Creek, WI and Kathryn (Dale) Rundgren of Salem, OR; grandchildren Hannah Rundgren, Walter Rundgren, Audrey (Caleb) Schilling, Stephen Rundgren, Nathan Rundgren, Joshua Kehren, Elias Rundgren, and Jason Kehren, sister-in-law Nancy (Lyle) Mueller, The Villages, FL; brother-in-law Trent (Salva) Gabert, Norman, OK; cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service for Betty will be on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 510 Idylwood Dr. SE, Salem, Oregon. Visitation will begin at 10:00am and the service will follow at 11:00am. The service will be livestreamed on YouTube.com (search for Immanuel Lutheran Church WELS). A meal in Betty’s honor will follow the funeral service. Memorials may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
