

Catalino (Lee) Pascual Calhoun Castillo was born February 14, 1943 in San Francisco, California to Catalino Mata Pascual Castillo and Thelma Dorothy Calhoun. The family moved to Fruitvale, Oregon where Lee attended Fruitvale School and then McLoughlin Union High School in Milton-Freewater. He was the oldest of four children and was joined by siblings; Tom, Judi and Nick. In his youth Lee did lots of work on the family farm and worked for his aunt Dottie’s hired hand on her farm. The boys laid sprinkler pipe and worked bailing hay as well as taking care of animals at home. As a teen he worked at Umatilla Canning Company there in Milton-Freewater Living in the country Lee enjoyed fishing, hunting, and swimming. After his junior year at Mac Hi Lee joined the National Guard and later the Army. He then enlisted in the Navy September 26, 1963. He was assigned to duty on the USS Coral Sea, an aircraft carrier that saw action in the Vietnam War. An Aviation Boatswain's Mate and Machinery Repairman he earned the rank of E-4. He was on the flight deck of the ship. For his service he earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star and Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. He was honorably discharged September 7, 1967.
Lee married Linda Jenise Carter February 1, 1968 in Vancouver, Washington. Sadly, their daughter, Diana Jo Castillo died at birth August 1, 1970. Lee moved to Portland, Oregon and worked at various jobs. He met and married Jeri Allyn Sutphin May 14, 1971. The family moved first to Verboort and then to Forest Grove and later, Cornelius. Jeri had a son named Gordon and Lee became a father to him. He became a Boy Scout leader and taught Gordon how to hunt and fish. During this time Lee and Jeri enjoyed many hunting, fishing and camping trips. They were involved with a local motorcycle group and went on many long riding adventures. Lee was active in Black Powder shooting and they were involved in many rendezvous. He even won a rifle for his marksmanship along with belt buckles and knives. Lee worked as a police officer, an insulation installer and truck driver for local companies. His family was everything and he worked hard to provide for them. Lee last lived in Salem, Oregon. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ January 16, 2024.
Along the way he made many friends and was loved by his family. He is preceded in death by his brother, Tom, daughter, Diana Jo, his wife Jeri an her son, Gordon Squires. He is survived by his sister, Judi Baker and her husband, Nate of Salem, brother Nick Castillo and his wife, Marian of Damascus, Oregon, numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
