Ernest hailed from Horton, Kansas, and completed his high school education at North Salem High. He served his country with honor and was granted an Honorable Discharge from the Navy.
Ernest was a beloved family man, the son of Ernest Chapman and Velma Chapman, and brother to Bob, Beth, and Neva. He leaves behind his daughters, Trish Crenshaw and Gayle Smith, and cherished grandchildren Brandon, Jordan, Kendra, Skyler, and Harm. He was also an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
In his community, Ernest was known for his volunteer work with the Keizer Fire Department and the Salem Police, as well as his involvement in the National Night Out.
A funeral service will be held at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, located at 1350 Commercial Street SE, Salem, Oregon, 97302, on January 20, 2026, starting at 11:00 am. This will be followed by a committal and graveside service at Belcrest Memorial Park, 1295 Browning Avenue South, Salem, Oregon, 97302, at 2:00 pm.
Ernest's life was a testament to his commitment to family, community, and country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
