Eugene Free, 90, died peacefully on September 7 in his home of 62 years in Salem, Oregon, surrounded by his wife and children.
Eugene was born on December 6, 1932 in Nisland, South Dakota to his parents, Adam and Martha Free. His family traveled to Oregon when he was just 4 years old on the back of a flatbed truck, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was one of 17 children, which became an intricate part of his story and identity. He was drafted in 1953 and served in the US Army and in 1955 was honorably discharged.
Those who were blessed to know Eugene knew of his kindness, tremendous work ethic, dedication to his family and love of overalls. He found great joy in making people laugh through his silly antics. He loved fishing, camping, and the children in his life. He was a talented craftsmen and made countless wood furniture pieces, which are scattered throughout the homes of his loved ones. He was a man of true character and showed others through his consistent acts of love, honesty, and sincere commitment to the love of his life and wife of 67 years.
He was adored by all and loved by many.
He is survived by his wife, Delcia Free, his 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and siblings, and is getting his dancing shoes back on in heaven as he awaits his bride.
A visitation for Gene will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, 1350 Commercial Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97302. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Grace Community Church, 4105 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, Oregon.
