He met and married Joan Chastain. They were married for 44 years. They had three children, Gary, Donna and Janet.
George worked for the United States Post Service for 35 years and retired in 1986. He was a member of the US Postal Service union, Branch 347 and held many positions during that time. He was President, Health Benefits Rep. and lobbied in Washington, DC. He was Letter Carrier of the Year and also was involved in getting the Annual Postal Food Drive started in Salem.
In February of 1986, George and Joan were thrilled to be new grandparents to Adam. He was George’s buddy from that point on.
When Adam started school, George started volunteering in the elementary school. He was loved by the children and teachers alike.
George also was very active in the Salem Fuschia Society. He took part in planting days, plant sales and served as President for the club.
He also worked for the State Fair for 32 years. He was superintendent of the floral gardens, and then moved to the information booth where he enjoyed talking with the fairgoers. He was presented with a lifetime free pass to the fair when he retired.
Later on he started volunteering at the Mission Mill Museum. He really loved this work. Having been born and raised in Salem, he had a good knowledge to be able to identify old pictures and news clippings. He loved working during the Christmas events at Mission Mill.
George was predeceased by his wife, Joan and daughter, Donna and his brother, Oliver Knox. He is survived by daughter, Janet Knox, son, Gary Knox and grandson, Adam Knox. He is also survived by brother, Ron Knox, and sister, Lyla Heinz and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.
Service will be held on November 17, 2023 at 1:00 at Restlawn Memory Gardens.
