Glenndora Elizabeth Peterson, 95, passed away on October 10th, at home with her family at her side. She left us with memories and love that will continue to bring smiles to the faces of all she knew. “Dorie” was born in Calwa, California on December 6, 1918. After moving to Oregon with her family in 1924, she attended school at Highland Elementary, Parrish Junior High and North Salem High School. She was a member of the first graduating class from North Salem High School. During her younger years she would work in the family laundry business in the Keizer area, which is when she developed the interest and skills in sewing. In future years she made many dresses for weddings and other special occasions. In 1940, Dorie married John Peterson and later moved to a farm in Turner to raise their six children. The challenges and joys of farm life provided many fond memories for family and friends.
After John died in 1974, Dorie continued to live in the Turner area until 1986 when she moved to her home in Keizer. It was after she turned 80 that she began traveling around the world. Traveling with daughter Caroline and her husband Ron made it possible for Dorie to visit five continents. Included in these travels was visits to Moroco, Africa, St Petersburg Russia, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and riding in a gondola in Venus Italy. Dorie was always ready for new experiences, parasailing in Hawaii at age 90 and firing a gun, glock 9 mm, for the first time at age 94.
Preceding her in death was sister Ruth Hutchinson, brother Harry Mitchell and granddaughter Jami Peterson. Dorie is survived by daughters Gloria and Caroline (Ron) and sons Stanley (Sharon), Edward (Marilyn), Charlie (Karin), and Jerry (Kim). Dorie was the matriarch of a family that numbered over 65. And her family was her life. These included 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren.
Throughout her life Dorie believed in a strong work ethic, the need for common sense, and the importance of having patience, understanding, acceptance and kindness for others. Those that knew her had the opportunity to see these lessons from one of the best teachers and role model. We will miss her.
Viewing will be Tuesday, October 14th at 3:00 to 6:00. A celebration of life will be at Howell, Edwards and Dorerksen on Wednesday, October 15th at 2:00.
