James was born on September 23, 1935 in San Mateo, California and he was the son of Charles and Ruby (Ward) Smith. He graduated high school and earned his Bachelor's Degree. He was a minister and worked as a painter and decorator. He resided throughout the country and moved to Woodburn in 2015.
