Joan Ferne Johanson, 90, of Salem, passed away on November 20, 2025. She was born on February 16, 1935, in Brooklyn, Illinois. In her youth, Joan moved with her family to Butte, Montana, where she later met Arvid Leroy Johanson. They married in 1951 and began building their life together. The family moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1963, where Joan lived out the remainder of her life.
Joan spent her life raising a family while working in various jobs. Her favorite role, as it was the most creative, was teaching Tole and decorative painting for Chemeketa Community College. Joan loved all things Victorian and enjoyed hosting and attending tea parties. Joan volunteered for many organizations over the years. She will be remembered for her faith, determination, and creativity.
As a Master Gardener, Joan found joy in cultivating an abundant garden, canning and juicing the produce, and sharing the results with family, friends, and her church community. Among the blessings in her life, Joan’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her the greatest joy.
Joan is survived by her three children: Deborah Johanson, Terri Hamblen (Jason), and Rebecca Lucas (Randy); six grandchildren, Gene, Brian, and Daniel Austin; Ben Hittle and Anne Marie (Hittle) Black; and Kendra Lucas, as well as numerous great-grandchildren who carry forward her story. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arvid, and other loved ones who passed before her.
A private service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you perform a random act of kindness for a stranger, or do something loving for someone you know, in Joan’s name.
