Joan Larson Waddingham
June 11, 1930 – October 19, 2019
Joan Larson Waddingham passed away peacefully on October 19, 2019 in Salem at the age of 89. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lester “Doc” and Irene Larson.
In Joan’s teen years, the family relocated from Riverside, Illinois, buying a cherry orchard in “God’s Country” Cove Orchard, Oregon. She graduated from Yamhill-Carlton High School, and attended Linfield College in McMinnville, later majoring in Spanish at Portland State.
Joan married John A. Waddingham on May 3, 1952, and they raised their family in southwest Portland. John preceded her in death in 2002, after celebrating 50 years of marriage filled with music, dance and extensive world travels.
Joan had a delightful sense of humor and actively enjoyed bowling, tennis, kayaking and choir. She was known to all as a “Professional Volunteer,” giving her time to church, charity, hospital ministry and Camp Fire.
She is survived by two children, Mary Forner and husband Gary of Salem, Tom Waddingham and wife Ingrid of Forest Grove, three grandchildren (Heather Wenrick, Dan Waddingham and Brian Jagodnik), six great-grandchildren and her sister Janyce Gassaway.
The family wishes to convey their appreciation for the tender personal care provided by the wonderful Memory Care Staff at Capital Manor in Salem.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 2 pm on November 25, 2019 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem. Contributions are encouraged to organizations engaged in the study and eradication of Alzheimer’s Disease.
