When she was a toddler, the family moved to Silverton, OR. Residing near Silver Creek, Joyce developed a passion for swimming. One day, tired of only watching the fun from the bank, Joyce jumped into the creek. Fortunately, she lived a long life by instantly learning to swim!
After graduating from Silverton High School, she became a beautician.
In 1950 she married Lloyd Jack McFarlane and they had two children, Gary and Heather.
Joyce was artistic and nurtured her creativity by sewing, refinishing furniture and decorating her home. Later, she took up oil painting. She sold her paintings at art shows and galleries. She also did water colors and silversmithing. She was an artist and fashionista with a lot of bling!
Joyce was an owner of two taverns. She and Jack divorced and Joyce eventually moved to Tulalip, WA, remaining in that area for more than 25 years. Besides being an artist, she traveled and enjoyed various cruises.
Joyce returned to Salem in 2015 to be near her daughter. She resided at Madrona Hills until her death of Covid.
Survivors include her children, Gary McFarlane and Heather McFarlane Martinez. Grandchildren are Sean McFarlane, Heather Albershardt, Kristofer Martinez and Jorge Daniel Martinez. Great grandchildren are Faith and Zane Albershardt and Axel and Santiago Martinez.
