I met Louis in the mid ‘80s, his life didn’t revolve around his job like a lot of people, it was his love of horticulture. One time I remember visiting his orchard in his backyard and he would demonstrate the technique of grafting different citrus plants to a develop a new hybrid. After several trips to the TX Valley, all his hard work payed off. The next year he gave me a copy of an article that he co-authored and was published in regards to his contributions.
He also loved trains because of his father and the lost era of traveling by trains. I could relate, because as a child my family would travel by train to visit family in Alabama. We would talk about the dining car experience, the sleeper cars. The observation decks and of course stepping out on the platform deck of the last car watching the train as it traveled around a bend. I admired his free spirt, to leave the rest home on his own and move to Oregon. And then drove back to TX twice in his Prius!!
Politics would come up from time to time and he and I saw eye to eye in our political principles. After just a few minutes talking with him I knew he wasn’t the average Brookside Redneck. He was educated, open minded, and of course vocal about his beliefs. I will truly miss our discussions of current events and how much this country needs Berny Sanders.
I will truly miss his vast knowledge gained from his unique life’s experiences.
