Mark was born November 10, 1934 in Roland, Iowa to Abel and Ruby (Rorem) Helvig. He lived in Salem, Oregon for quite awhile, graduating from Salem High School. He then joined the Marine Corp, serving for two years.
He had a passion for fishing, golf, and building houses. He worked as a commercial salmon fisherman in Newport, Oregon and continued enjoying fishing with his friends on Paulina Lake. While spending time in the Palm Desert, California Mark was a marshal for several golf courses and won many shuffleboard tournaments.
Mark is survived by his wife, Linda, who he married on July 30, 2002; son Gary Helvig; daughters Sandy Helvig and Jody Helvig; sisters Ruth Peterson and Alice Eykelbosch; grandsons Nick Outhouse, Steve Outhouse, Austin Baker, and Brandon Baker; and great-granddaughters Olivia Outhouse and Madison Outhouse.
A memorial service for Mark will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, 1350 Commercial Street SE, Salem, OR 97302.
