Mary Ellen Cogswell

January 7, 1928March 26, 2014

Mary Ellen Cogswell passed away peacefully at home on March 26, 2014. Mary was born on January 7, 1928 in Utah to Nora and Jacob Burris. Mary grew up in the Beaverton area and married Bill G. Cogswell in 1947.

Mary worked as a homemaker, postal courier, knitter, Brownie Leader, and avid golfer. Mary was active in her communities and family life. Mary and Bill lived for several years in Bend and Pendleton, Oregon, before returning to the Salem area, Mary and Bill were snowbirds, spending many happy seasons camping in Arizona in their RV. Mary and Bill enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Bill’s passing in 2010.

Mary was a loving mother and a wonderful and involved grandma. Mary had a special bond with each of her four grandchildren. She was always ready and able to step in and help out with the grandkids whenever needed. She always went above and beyond with her grandchildren. Mary was an avid baker and was famous for her pies – earning the nickname of “The Two Pie Grandma”, because there were always at least two delicious pies waiting on any visit. We love you Mom/Grandma. You will be greatly missed!

Mary is survived by her sister, Carol; children, David, Marilee, and Kurt; and her four grandchildren, Kara, Kelly, David and Olivia.

A Graveside Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 1 at 1:30 pm. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. To leave audio or online condolences please visit

Mary and Bill ere our neighbors for many fun years. They were good neighbors, always there if we needed them. After Bill died, Mary continued with a strong spirit. She came over and played Scrabble with us a few times and let me tell you she was a good Scrabble player! We will miss Mary just as we have missed Bill. We kn ow they are together now, young and laughng, working on the stained glass together, and doing puxxles whil Bill goes out to golf. Our thoughts are with all the family as you finish their life on 15th Ct. S.

Mary was my Mom's best Mom was Jo Crawford. I'm sorry to say that after my mom passed in 1999, we fell out of contact with Bill and Mary after a couple years. However both Bill and Mary have always been and always will hold a special place in my heart! I am very sorry for your loss, Mary was a wonderful person and I loved her. ~Shelly Crawford-Lauer
