Our precious mom, grandmother (aka Uppie), great-grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend, joyfully went home to be with her Lord on February 4, 2023 at age 102. She was reunited with her loving husband, William and her two sons, James Lawrence and Timothy William.
Midge was born on July 16, 1920 in Stockton, CA to Lawrence and Edna Hawkinson. She grew up in Santa Cruz and later moved to San Francisco. She then attended San Jose State University, where she earned a degree in Library Science. She landed her first job as a children’s librarian at the Burlingame Public Library in Burlingame, CA. She later became the branch manager of the Easton Drive Library in Burlingame, a job she loved and cherished until her retirement in 1975.
She met her husband, Bill, in 1942 while he was stationed in San Francisco during WWII. They married on November 14, 1943. After the war, they settled on the San Francisco peninsula, living in Millbrae, Belmont, and San Mateo. During this time, they became parents to Kathy, Jimmy, and Tim. They were wonderful parents and provided many happy memories for their children as well as sharing their faith in God through their example of loving and serving the Lord. After retirement, Bill and Midge moved to Salem, OR to be closer to their daughter, Kathy, and their eventual grandchildren. They were longtime members of Salem Alliance Church.
In 1998, they moved to Capital Manor. Midge enjoyed many interests and activities throughout her life, but her biggest joy was being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Cowan and son-in-law, Dennis; her daughter-in-law, Melony Dunn; her loving brother, Lawrence Hawkinson; her granddaughters, Amanda Cowan, Jennifer (Jason) Marshall, Katey (Tommy) Zellner, and Allison (Josh) Lewis; and her great-grandchildren, Kylie and Hailey Zellner, Kendra and Ryan Marshall, and Owen Lewis. She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, including Debi Rogers, who was like another daughter to her.
Midge was truly a caring and warm-hearted person, who blessed each person she met. We will miss her love, kindness, and encouragement so much.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Capital Manor in Salem on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Alliance Missions or the Capital Manor Foundation.
