Phyllis Helen Meyer

Phyllis Helen Hannay Meyer, 89, slipped away to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 2, 2019, at Salem Hospital with her two daughters by her side. She was a resident of Keizer for the last year and a half. Phyllis died of age related issues.

George Franklin and Evelyn Alice (Brownell) Hannay welcomed their first daughter at the hospital in Mankato, Minnesota, on February 28, 1930. She grew up in Amboy and St. Paul, Minnesota. The family detoured to California during Phyllis's junior high school years so her father could work in the Bay Area shipyards as part of the WWII war effort.

After a visit to relatives in Oregon, the Hannays decided it was time to escape the humidity, mosquitoes, and snow of Minnesota and settled in Corvallis, Oregon. It was there that Phyllis graduated from high school in 1948. On and off throughout the years, she enjoyed her work in clerical positions. Ending her career in Lakewood, Washington, she was the Medical Records Clerk at Lakewood General Hospital, later St. Clare's Hospital.

Phyllis married Richard Roscoe in 1950. Together they had two daughters. They divorced in 1973. Later, Phyllis married Saron Minden, who then preceded her in death. In 2003, Phyllis married the love of her life, Don Meyer. They enjoyed a quiet life together until Don passed away in 2009.

When her daughters arrived, beginning in 1952, she became the quintessential homemaker of the '50s and '60s. Phyllis enjoyed cooking, sewing, handiwork, volunteering at her church, and camping trips each summer. As Phyllis's family grew, she found much joy in helping with the Girl Scout troops, throwing showers for family and friends, and creating handmade projects for all the new grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Phyllis delighted in making the smallest occasions special, and her family will remember this about her. Later in life, her passions were quilting and genealogy. Her most important achievements involved taking the time to play games with her family, making home-cooked meals for busy friends, and spending quiet hours in conversation with others.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents and husband, Donald Meyer. She is survived by daughters, Alice (Dale) Koger, and Georgia (Ron) Freeman, all of Keizer, Oregon; her sister, Claudia Davis of Olympia, Washington; her grandchildren, Randy (Heather) Freeman of Amity, Oregon, Sarah (Spencer) Hohenshelt of Silverton, Oregon, and Brandon (Jessica) Koger also of Silverton, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis was blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Lane (Tori) Freeman, Owen Koger, Hannah Hohenhelt, Brittney Freeman, Paige Koger, Connor Hohenshelt, Nathan Hohenshelt, Faith Koger, and Amelia Hohenshelt. Her latest joy in life came with great-great-granddaughter, Emalia Freeman.

A memorial service for Phyllis will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2019 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Emmanuel Bible Church (EBC) South Building, 8512 Sunnyview Rd NE, Salem, OR 97305. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the EBC Building Fund in Phyllis's memory.
