Shirley P. Haynes Huff
March 28, 1913 – September 28, 2020
A Testimony to a Life Led by God
Shirley Phyllis Haynes Huff, age 107, passed peacefully on Monday, September 28th, 2020 in Sublimity, Oregon. She was born in Yamhill, Oregon on March 28th, 1913 to Oscar and Mae Haynes.
Shirley had an older sister named Edna and a younger brother named Murray. They grew up on a prune orchard where Shirley enjoyed immersing herself in nature and reading books. She was always very intelligent, and that was showcased when she became the Valedictorian of her school, having barely turned 16-years-old. True to her traits, she spent time in Linfield University and later worked for the Forestry Service. Her romantic first encounter with her future husband, Walter, was at a church dinner where he caught her attention by dumping his plate of food on his lap. They married May 26th, 1934 in Lakeview. On April 25th, 1935, she gave birth to her first daughter, Hazel, who died the same day. She then gave life to her fist son, Warren, on April 12th, 1936, her daughter, Mary, on July 15th, 1938, second son, John, on August 2nd, 1940, third daughter, Melva, on August 22nd, 1942, and her last son, Max, on April 12th, 1945.
What an honor and privilege it is to have had Shirley in our lives; a woman with so much love and grace that it truly felt like she was an Angel on Earth. You could see the love of the Lord reflected in her eyes and every smile that adorned her face. Being around Shirley made you feel cherished; she was always there, ready to take care of you and love you. Her warmth and consideration leaving a lasting impact that expressed itself in everything and everyone around her. From the house on Knapp Street to the one Warren had given her, full of love and memories of her kids and grandkids coming together to fix it, to the yard which showcased her green thumb and love of nature, to every item she owned that has a story attached. She was also well known for her sweet tooth, always having ice cream in the freezer and lemon drops on her table, her soft spot for crossword puzzles, and her mandatory morning coffee.
Shirley leaves behind a rich legacy of love and kindness that she found through Christ.
She was preceded in death by Edna & Ralph Russel, Murray & Dorothy Haynes, husband Walter P. Huff, her daughter Hazel Huff, her sons Warren Huff, John Huff, Max Huff and his wife Patricia, Michael Hale (Melva's husband), and her grandchildren Danny and Derrick Huff.
Shirley was succeeded by her daughters Mary Mason (and her husband David), Melva Hale, and Glenda Huff (Warren's wife); her nine grandchildren: Katy, Rob, John, Lynn, Nick, Karen, Andy, Darrell, and Brenda; her many loved nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and her great-great grandchildren.
