Somchit Boonkoom was more than a mother; she was a source of unwavering love, strength, and wisdom. She touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and resilience will forever be etched in our hearts.
Born on November 16, 1942, in Phichit, Thailand, Somchit grew up to be an extraordinary woman. Somchit’s training in Thai cooking started as early as grade school. She continued that love for cooking and received a food service certificate and her diploma from Bangkok Institute of Technology. On several occasions, Somchit had the opportunity to prepare and serve the Royal Family of Thailand while she studied at the Institute.
In 1968, Somchit traveled to the United States. She lived in Corvallis Oregon, and continued her education, receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Home Economics and Education from Linfield University.
Somchit’s dream of owning and operating Thai restaurants came true when she opened her first Thai restaurant, A Taste of Thai, in Salem Oregon in 1995. Soon after she opened three additional restaurants in Eugene, Albany, and a second location in Salem.
Somchit displayed a deep sense of spirituality, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on her community which led her on a remarkable journey that touched the lives of countless people. Somchit dedicated her life to building a Thai temple in Turner, Oregon. The temple became her passion and life‘s work as she poured her heart and soul into it. Her determination, selflessness, and leadership inspired the support of the Thai community around her. Somchit’s tireless efforts in spearheading the temple’s construction and overcoming financial obstacles became the foundation of Wat Buddha Oregon. Somchit was elected by her peers as the first President of Wat Buddha Oregon. The temple now provides spiritual guidance, comfort, and a sense of belonging to all who visit.
Somchit, also known as Mama Som, was a devoted mother who was a shining beacon of love and support in the lives of her two daughters, Vijitra and Savitree. Raised with the Thai spirit of hard work and perseverance, she pushed her daughters to reach their full potential in academics, extracurricular activities and life itself. Mama Som mentored and nurtured their talents and passions, taking them to countless dance competitions and beauty pageants. Her sacrifices, whether tirelessly driving to and from dance classes, piano lessons, orchestra and competitions or sewing and packing costumes late into the night, were a testament to her love and determination to see her daughters flourish. Her love knew no bounds, and her daughters were her pride and joy…. until Phuket and Pinky came along.
Mama Som had an extraordinary connection with her chihuahuas, who brought immense joy and companionship into her life. They were a constant source of comfort and happiness for her, always sleeping by her side and happy to be pinned into whatever dress she put on them.
Mama Som was also a loving grandmother. Her relationship with her one special grandson, Tevan, was filled with warmth, laughter and candy. She was a constant source of encouragement for Tevan. Whether it was school activities or sporting events, she was there, her eyes sparkling with pride and love. To her, Tevan was a shining star, and she held his accomplishments close to her heart.
Somchit had a heart of gold and the ability to make everyone smile and feel special. She was the epitome of grace, kindness and unconditional love.
