Arthur Salzner Anderson, 95, passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2018 surrounded by family celebrating his life of love and service.
He was born in 1923 in Boise, Idaho to Mildred Salzner and Howard Ballantyne Anderson Sr. In June of 1948 he married his lifetime sweetheart and eternal companion, Janice Virginia Jacobsen, in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised seven wonderful children who have provided a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren who served as a consistent joy.
Art loved his family and always gave them his first priority. Of his many titles, that of husband and father were the ones he cherished the most. At the same time, he balanced family with church, business, and community service. In life outside the family he had many titles, but the one that is most fitting in every area of his life was "Servant to All".
He loved playing handball for over 50 years, taught his grandchildren to downhill snow ski until he was 80 and took great joy in performing temple sealings and giving patriarchal blessings to his grandchildren. He was the author of 6 motivational books that spanned over 50 years of writing…the first of which was titled BY EXAMPLE. And that's how he lived his life, BY EXAMPLE. (By example, he also taught all of us to love popcorn and ice cream!) He was patient, loving, kind, non-judgmental, cheerful, happy and truly endured in faith to the very end.
A majority of his business career was spent with Evans Communications where he eventually served as President of its head office. After retirement he joined with two sons to write and help inspire dental professionals throughout the world. He continued to write until the afternoon of his death
His community interest was broad and influential. As a sampling, he served as President of Deseret Book for five years and a board member for 20. He was chairman of the Board of Primary Children's Medical Center for 8 years and a board member for 24.
His Church service was an important part of his life. He served as the first Bishop of the University 7th Ward, as a member of the Presidency of the Salt Lake Foothill Stake, and at age 45 served as President of the North Carolina-Virginia Mission with his wife and seven children at his side. He served as a Regional Representative, President of the Provo Temple, and as a Stake Patriarch. He served with his wife on a special Church Public Affairs assignment for 12 years and as a sealer in the Salt Lake Temple for 28 years.
Jan, was the love of his life. She kept the family of seven children working together during mission service while she served as head of women's auxiliaries of the North Carolina-Virginia Mission and later as matron of the Provo Temple. He supported her during her work on the Relief Society General Board and as a member of a number of Church writing committees. For them, working together was always a full-time joy. As his primary care-giver the past four years, a true love story unfolded. Our family has marveled at the strength and courage Mom (Grandma and Great Grandma) exerted so they could live together and independently in their family home of over 60 years.
Both lives were centered on their seven treasured children: Roger B. (Laurie): Gregory B. (Allyson); Julie J. (Gregg Olsen); Lane J. (Julie); Margaret V. (Russell Ence); Heidi G. (Todd Eldredge) and Steven J. This posterity has produced 64 grandchildren and 71 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his brothers Howard and Warren; daughter-in-law Robyn Curtis Anderson and great grandchildren Daniel Nielson and Rex Flynn.
Friends may call on Friday, March 30th at the Foothill 6th Ward Chapel at 2215 E. Roosevelt Avenue (1400 South and 2200 East) from 10:00am to 11:30am. A celebration of his life will follow at noon in the same building. Burial will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Smiles for Life Foundation to benefit the Primary Children's Medical Center (www.smilesforlife.org).
