Fred K. Boede concluded his long and fulfilling life on July 23, 2018. He was determined to “not be a bother” for family members making his final arrangements, so he authored his own obituary several years ago. In his own words:
“I was born October 9, 1927 to Helene Teschner Boede and Fritz Boede, at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. I was the only boy in a family of four children, all of whom have proceeded me in death. I attended Salt Lake City public schools. Shortly after graduating from South High School, I was inducted into the U.S. Army, and after my discharge, I served a two-year LDS mission in South Africa. After completing this mission, I attended the University of Utah, and received a Bachelors degree. In 1954, I married Gwen Carlow, with whom I have four wonderful children, Gail Marshall (Bob), Steven Boede (Laurie), David Boede (Deborah) and Diane Boede-Daniel (Greg), along with ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. However, in 1983 after 29 years of marriage, Gwen and I were divorced. In 1985 I married Pamela Wilson, and have been happily married for 32 years. In 1954, after graduation from the university, I was employed by Strevell Paterson Finance Corporation for 12 years, and was fortunate to be promoted to manage their Denver and Salt Lake City branch offices, and also their newly developed S.P.Leasing Company. After Strevell Paterson Finance was sold, I returned to the University of Utah, received a Masters degree, and was employed at Holy Cross Hospital, as Director of Patient and Family Counseling. In 1975 I was appointed Executive Director of the hospital’s outreach medical clinics, ambulance services and their West Jordan satellite pharmacy. I retired in January 1993.
During the early years of my retirement, Pam and I enjoyed an extensive travel schedule, including numerous trips to Europe and Canada, along with many cities throughout the U.S. I developed hobbies in woodworking, gardening, and became “somewhat” competent on the computer. In 2013, while on vacation in San Diego, an accidental fall led to spinal stenosis. Since that time, this disability has limited my travel ability drastically.
At my specific request, there will be no funeral service. I have requested that there be a short family only viewing, followed by a family graveside dedication. I have lived a long, happy and fulfilling life, and hope that I have had a positive influence on my family and friends throughout these years. In lieu of flowers, I would prefer that you take your family or loved ones, out to a nice dinner, or contribute to the charity of your choice.”
As listed above, Fred is survived and deeply missed by his wife, Pamela, his four children, as well as ten cherished grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Helene Boede, and three sisters, Helen Boede, Ruth Jepson, and Irene Scally.
