On November 10, 2015, our dear sweet wife, mother and “Nona,” Jacqueline Sloan Frei, passed away very unexpectedly while she and her husband were traveling overseas. Jacque was born and raised in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Reid and MaRee Sloan. From an early age, she was full of zest and spirit and loved to be involved. She was the third of three siblings with an older sister, Judy, and an older brother, Phillip.
Jacque’s greatest joy in life was her family. She married Michael Frei on June 11, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple and they have been married for an exciting and colorful 46 years. Their family was started in Newport Beach, California, and after four years they, and two boys, moved to Boise, Idaho. A few years later, Mike and Jacque and their two sons and now a daughter settled in Holladay, Utah, where they have lived for the last 37 years.
Mike and Jacque are parents to five children and they have 15 grandchildren (with another one on the way). Her grandchildren called her “Nona”, and they were such a delight in Jacque’s life. Their home was constantly filled with laughter, running feet, toys of every kind, parties and heavenly chaos. She was closely bonded to all of her grandchildren and supported them in many ways.
Jacque attended the University of Utah (Go Utes!) where she graduated with a nursing degree in 1971. She was an RN working first at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach and later at St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise. As the family grew by the addition of two daughters, Jacque shifted to part-time nursing in hospitals, emergency rooms and clinics. Her medical knowledge was a blessing to many and was a “calling” from which she was never fully released. Her children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends would often contact Jacque for medical advice.
Jacque was known as a fun friend, parent and grandparent. She kept a busy schedule and was a terrific planner of various events. Jacque was known to make sure weekends were full of exciting activities, and many trips were scheduled and many friends were visited. Jacque always had a full social calendar. Jacque and Mike enjoyed traveling to see different places, cultures, and people. Their favorite destinations were the various islands of Hawaii where they loved the music, culture, climate, flowers, and of course, the beach! Jacque always considered herself a “hapa haole” (meaning a half Hawaiian and half white person).
Jacque was devoted to the gospel of Jesus Christ and LDS/Christian principles. She served in many different ward and stake callings and she and Mike recently fulfilled a mission in Laie, Hawaii, where they further fine-tuned the “Aloha Spirit”. At the time of her death, she was serving as a volunteer nurse at the Hope Medical Clinic, and served regularly in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She leaves a legacy of faith and testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Perhaps her greatest gift was her ability to be a true and lasting friend. Jacque will always be remembered for her great warmth and enthusiastic spirit. She welcomed everyone into her life and home with open arms and kindness, and was a second mother to several. She had a gift for making others feel loved and important in her presence. Jacque served her family and community constantly with endless energy and deep compassion. She is truly an elect lady.
Jacque is survived by her husband, Mike, her children Chris (Cheryl), Dan (Lisa), Jaime (Tyler), Kelly, Tracie (Mark), her brother Phillip Sloan (Catherine), and her 15 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS church building at 4917 South Viewmont Street in Holladay, Utah with a viewing from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Friends and family may also call at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Mortuary at 3401 S. Highland Drive in Salt Lake City on Friday, November 20, 1015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Condolences and memories may be shared at the website www.WasatchLawn.com.
