1941–2021
West Jordan, UT — Jay Ernest Thomas peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by family on December 27, 2021 at the age of 80. Jay was born on March 22, 1941 in Logan, Utah to Julian Robert and Clara Norene Richins Thomas. He spent most of his growing up years in Monticello, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School and went on to graduate from Brigham Young University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While attending BYU he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints in Helsinki, Finland. He also served six years in the Military National Guard in the linguist unit, Finnish Section. Jay was sealed to Janet Lois Hook in the Salt Lake temple on May 19, 1972.
He thoroughly enjoyed his profession as a Mechanical Engineer working for Hercules and Utah Power and Light. He spent many long hours helping to make power plants more functional to bring light and power to the Western US.
Some of Jay's hobbies and greatest joys in life were his beautiful garden, fishing, the great outdoors, family history, being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, and sharing the things he loved with others.
Jay spent over 35 years of his married life doing missionary work; inner city mission, stake and ward missionary and going on a mission with Jan to the Kentucky, Louisville Mission. He also served 15 years as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple.
Jay is survived by his wife Jan, daughters Julie (Matt Greenwood), Tiffany (Scott Newbold), Tamara (Ross Johnson) and ten grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jared, as well as his best buddy and grandson, Dallin Greenwood.
Services will be held Monday January 3, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the West Jordan 19th Ward Chapel 2666 W 7000 S, West Jordan, UT. A viewing will be held at the same location from 9:00–10:45 prior to the services. Interment will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park South Valley Cemetery.
Those who wish to honor Jay’s love of giving to others are asked to consider donating to the Utah Food Bank in lieu of flowers.
