1918 ~ 2011
Jean Thurston Manville passed away August 23, 2011 in Salt Lake City. Jean was born in Payette, Idaho January 27, 1918. She was the granddaughter of Burt Venable, the founder of the newspaper, The Independent Enterprise, which is still being published. Her grandparents moved to Payette from Kansas in the late 1800's, and the family grew up with many stories of the early pioneering families in the Snake River area. Jean attended Payette schools and was valedictorian of her senior class, as well as being involved in many school activities. She attended the University of Idaho, where she was affiliated with Delta Gamma sorority. In 1937, she married Gerry Wright Manville in St James Episcopal Church in Payette, where she and Gerry were active for many years. They celebrated their 71st anniversary before Gerry's death in 2009.
Jean was a lifelong member of P.E.O, a women’s’ service organization. Professionally, she served as Registrar for West High School in Denver for a number of years, and in a similar capacity at Ontario High School in Oregon. Although she left college before graduating, she had an inquiring mind, read broadly, and up to the last days of her life, was devoted to her books and magazines on tape. She was always well informed and interested in contemporary affairs, instilling the love of learning in her children.
Although she and Gerry traveled extensively, her first love was the mountains of Idaho, where she grew up camping and hiking. She and Gerry continued that tradition, taking the family on many camping adventures. She had great spirit; she was, in every sense of the word, a lady, and she will be greatly missed.
Jean is survived by son and daughter-in-law Gary and Ruth Manville of Salt Lake City, Ut.; daughter and son-in-law, Judith Manville Runstad and Jon Runstad of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter and grandson-in-law Joellyn Manville and Jonathan Morrison of Salt Lake City; grandson Craig (Manville) Annsa and wife Bethy and their two children Sabia and Quillan of Portland, Ore.; granddaughter Stacey Runstad Campbell and her husband Donald Campbell of Anacortes, Wash. and their three children Blakely, Madison, and Halle; granddaughter Kayley Runstad Westra and her husband Dan Westra of Seattle, Wash. and their three children Ryan, Savannah and Anders. She is also survived by Thurston nephews Robert Thurston and his wife Jan Maitland of Corvallis, Ore., and Jim Thurston and his wife Pam of San Francisco, Calif., as well as Manville nieces Marcia Manville Williams of High Point, N.C. and Margie Manville Goertsema and husband Ken of Grangeville, Id. She is also survived by Ann Thurston, Sally Manville and Don Sturgis.
The family would like to thank the staff of Emeritus, Hospice, and in particular her caregivers Tanya, Erica and Liana of Caregivers Support for their dedication to Jean’s care over the past few years.
A memorial service will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, September 15, at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, 231 E. 100 South, Salt Lake City.
