She was born on June 7, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Henry Beck and Emma Flamm. During her youth, Joyce was a dedicated swimmer and competitive diver. She and her sister Beverly spent much of their time developing their skills at their family founded Beck Hot Springs in North Salt Lake. She carried her aquatic legacy into teaching many neighborhood children and her own children and grandchildren how to swim.
Joyce attended East High School and the University of Utah, where she graduated with a degree in Business Administration. During her time at the University of Utah, Joyce was a very active member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Joyce’s membership to her sorority came with lifelong friends with whom she enjoyed monthly luncheons for nearly 75 years. Her “Kappa Club” was one of her favorite activities where she could get glammed up for good food and lovely conversation.
It was also at “the U” where she met her first husband Bert Rider who had just returned from serving in the 10th Mountain Division in World War II. Joyce and Bert married on November 30, 1950 and had three children, Steve, Barbie and Creight. They built their family home in Olympus Cove in 1958 where Joyce lived until her passing.
Joyce was always very active in the community where she served as PTA president and president of the Pioneer Memorial Theatre Guild from 1970-1975. She was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints’ Holladay 12th Ward for over 60 years.
After the death of her first husband, Joyce married Robert Warren Barnes in 1975. It was at this time Joyce began a career in real estate. She was also a savvy business woman. During her extensive travels with her husband Warren they fell in love with Mexico, specifically the coastal town of Mazatlán. It was here where Joyce and Warren, along with their partners Wayne and Shirley Thornton, founded the Inn at Mazatlán hotel. Joyce would spend the next 34 years dedicated to “The Inn.” Additionally, Joyce’s love of skiing led her to own and operate her rental properties in Park City, Utah, the Alpenhof Condominiums.
Joyce was a multi-faceted woman with many hobbies including, skiing, swimming, cooking, traveling, gardening, golfing, fashion, fine dining, boating, and her favorite, hosting and entertaining.
But throughout her life, family togetherness was what Joyce loved most. From family vacations in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, to her annual Christmas Eve dinner, to simple backyard barbeques, being surrounded by her family and watching everyone have fun filled her heart most of all.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, brothers James and Robert, her sister Beverly, and both husbands. She is survived by her children Steven Rider (Karen), Barbara Rider Piña (Art), Creighton Rider (Lisa), 7 grandchildren (Erin, Alysha, Lindsay, Rob, Dayna, Tyson and Matt), 5 great grandchildren, and her loyal cat Angel.
The Family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Joyce’s caregiver, Anitha Tuyisenge, for her dedicated and excellent daily care and loving companionship to Joyce for the last 2 years. They would also like to thank Valeo Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate end of life care.
