Kathie married Wayne Coon in the Salt Lake Temple on May 20, 1965. They were the parents of four sons: Christopher, Jonathan, Jeremy, and Adam.
Kathie had many memorable traits that may continue beyond her mortal life.
Kathie was a devout follower of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was dedicated to every calling, whether serving as a temple worker, leading in Stake or Ward Relief Society presidencies or in Ward Young Women presidencies, teaching in Sunday School or Seminary, or chairing (with Wayne) a stake ball celebrating the Church’s Sesquicentennial. The Sesquicentennial calling may have been influenced by her reputation as a great party giver.
Kathie was a wonderful mother who, with some assistance from Wayne, raised four outstanding sons who love and revere her. To illustrate, in first grade, Jeremy doubted Wayne’s advice about a ban on calculators in that grade. But Jeremy later agreed with the same advice from Kathie. When Wayne asked why, Jeremy replied, “Mom is usually right, and with you it’s fifty-fifty.”
As a grandmother, Kathie taught her grandchildren to call her GrandKathie. Out of love, they did.
Kathie was a true friend and ready helper. Many would agree, “Everybody needs a friend like Kathie.”
Kathie was an avid participant in, and fan of, sports, mountain climbing, and games of all sorts. She swam, ran in marathons, played tennis, and was a spectator at Wimbledon. She climbed mountains, including Timpanogos and Kilimanjaro, and backpacked in Europe.
Her competitiveness helped her in negotiations. Kathie first proposed a climb of Everest. Her family compromised for a climb of Kilimanjaro with her two brothers, and a later climb with Jeremy. When Jonathan offered her a trip to the US Open, she brought him around to a trip to Wimbledon.
As Kathie grew older, she was challenged by health issues that slowed her down. Many times she fought back valiantly with success. When she realized her time had come, she readily submitted to God’s will.
Kathie's brother Jon (Donna Kay) passed away on May 25, 2014. Kathie is survived by her brother Craig (K); husband Wayne; four sons, Christopher (Kimberly), Jonathan (Kirsten), Jeremy (Katherine Judd), and Adam (Marcela); 11 grandchildren, Jordan, Trevor, Alexah, Brigham, Sarah, Hannah (Andrew), Abigail, Samuel, Chloe, Benjamin, and Charlie. She is also survived by many beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.
For immediate family and invited guests, a brief visitation and graveside services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
