May was born June 10, 1918 in Salem, Idaho to Rudolph and Bertha Rindlisbacher who came to the United States from Switzerland. Mae had 7 sisters Frieda, Emma, Mabel, Alice, Lillie, Elva and Thelma and one brother, Edward, who all proceeded her in death. She was the last surviving Rindlisbacher family. Mae graduated from Sugar High School in Sugar City. She met my father Alois Joseph Hilton (Al) in Stafford, Arizona while she was helping her sister Emma with newborn twins. They married April 6, 1940. Her sisters thought she had married a movie star because he was so tall and handsome. They loved to travel throughout the United States but settled in Salt Lake City. Their only child, Lorayne Mae, was born May 29, 1942 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Al died December 6, 1969. Married 1971 Percey Schmucker (deceased).
Until the age of 98 she lived alone, drove her car, did something everyday: Monday: Bingo, shopping with her daughter, picking up her movie magazines; Tuesday: volunteering serving lunch to what she said was the “old folks” at Columbus Senior Center; Wednesday: Meeting in the morning at Columbus to have coffee with her friends and playing Bingo; Thursday: Lunch with her girlfriends; Friday: eating salmon and playing Bingo at the Heritage Center where she volunteered for 15 years; Saturday: lunch and shopping with her niece Elaine; Sunday: reading her movie magazines. She was an avid reader of Ann Rule True Murder books. She liked to take the bus to Wendover with her daughter where she won a jackpot once.
She had a great sense of humor and made people laugh. She was the Volunteer of the month for South Salt Lake and rode in the parade, which she really enjoyed.
Mae passed away very quickly for which we are very grateful and did not suffer. At the very end when someone would ask how she was doing, she would say “GOOOD”, which was her attitude all her life. Never sweated the small stuff!
At the age of 102+, her life was fulfilled and she went to join her family and be with them. Mae was preceded in death by her husbands Alois (Al) Hilton, Percey Schmucker and grandson, David Hilton Harker. She survived by her daughter Lorayne (Gary Frank), Granddaughter Deana(Jay Mortensen) and Great grandchildren AJ and Kaycee Mortensen); also many nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.
Sweet dreams and don’t worry about all of us. We’ll be fine and thank you for all our wonderful memories of you.
We would like to thank the staff and aids at the Wellington who were very fond of her and called her “Miss Mae” and special thanks to Lydia for her tender care of Mae. She was with her every day and at the end. My mother loved her and called Lydia her friend. There will be a private graveside services for the immediate family on October 10, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive, where she will be buried next to her husband Al Hilton.
