“Calling the Heart Back Home”
Mina Sullivan has been given rest from her mortality at the age of 92. She was born on April 13th, 1920 in a small fishing village on an equally small island in the midst of the great Atlantic called Newfoundland. Even though she embraced her new home in America she never forgot her Irish roots or the old sod. St. Patrick’s Day was always celebrated with the fervor and excitement of Christmas in our house. Arriving at Mom’s house with the smell of her great Irish dinner, corned beef and cabbage, wafting through the air was a delight to the senses. Her great Irish Bread Puddin’ is something no one else will ever be able to duplicate. It was heaven on earth, me darlin’.
Mina married her GI sweetheart, Johnny Sullivan, in early 1940’s while he was stationed at Argenta Military Base close to her hometown during WWII. Together they had three children: Jeanette Young, Patricia (Luis) Macias, and Wayne (Carol) Sullivan. Mina loved and protected her children through thick and thin. Through many ocean crossings to distant lands for the many more years her Johnny continued to serve his country. Through every first day of every new school, every two years of their school days. Through every illness and every vaccination shot required to travel the world. And through many a financial crisis when they finally grew into adulthood.
Mina was such a special person, aware always of other’s feelings. Her classiness and honesty were always present and observed by those who knew and loved her. She was a great lady, full of life and famous for her hearty laugh, her quick ability to burst into song, her love of slot machines, and her witty sense of humor. She died with dignity and grace at home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Mina is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and all her siblings save one, her sister, Sade, age 100.
Mina is survived by her children: Jeanette, Patricia and Wayne. Her grandchildren: Steven, Lisa, Sommer, Cori, Cindy, Vince, Patrick, Merissa, Shannon and Shane. Her great-grandchildren: Jenna, Dillon, Victoria, Bradley, Rebekah, Rosie, Jason, Lily, Elizabeth, Matt, Katie, Lacy, and Tyrell. Her great-greats: James, Preston, Hannah, Isaiah, Katelyn.
The family wishes to thank Inspiration Hospice for their care and devotion to our beloved mother during her last days.
Viewing for friends and family will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary on Thursday, July 19th, from 12:30pm until 1:30pm, and interment will be immediately after the funeral service at 2pm at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 So. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
