Nephi Guevara Florez, age 94, of Salt Lake City, UT, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2019. He was the father of 8 children: John, Jerry, Lydia, AnitaLouise, Elizabeth, James, Susan and Ginny Lee (whom he now joins in heaven). He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Nephi was born in Helper, UT on November 7, 1924. He served in the United States Navy as a petty officer in WW2 aboard the USS Kadashan Bay in 1943, and received an honorable discharge.
It was while he was aboard the ship that he received and mastered his career as a chef.
As a civilian he continued in the food industry working as a chef and eventually opening up his own restaurant in California, where he remained for many years. Eventually he retired in Salt Lake City.
Nephi enjoyed studying scriptures and always remained faithful to his beliefs. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints. He became an Elder in the Mormon Church and also served in the Temple. He always enjoyed sharing the gospel with others.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary at 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Viewing/Visitation will be in the Wasatch chapel at 10:00am, and the Service will be at 11:00am. Interment will follow at 12:30pm at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
