Robert Ervin Stevenson (Buss), age 97, passed away peacefully at home on February 8, 2020. He was born July 18, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Harry and Isawinda Stevenson. Although his birth name is Robert, everyone who knew him has called him “Buss”. His sister gave him that nickname as a baby and it stuck with him.
Buss graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City in 1940. He served in the Navy in WWII from 1942-1946. Buss served as a missionary from 1947-1950 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Denmark; where his grandparents lived before coming to America. He married LaVae Billings in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 20, 1950. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching credential in 1952. Buss and LaVae had four children; Evaun, Kurt, Janeil and Cary. Buss spent the majority of his teaching career as an elementary school teacher in Pomona, California. Buss and LaVae served several missions together; they served in the Stockholm Sweden Temple Mission twice and in the Nauvoo Illinois Temple Mission. They also served in the Los Angeles Temple and Redlands Temple as temple workers.
Buss was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family and loved spending time with them. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Buss was a great example to all who knew him. He loved to share his love for the Savior with everyone. He never discussed politics but taught his children and grandchild to love America. He felt very blessed to be an American. Buss loved to talk about history and had many great stories of his life that will be passed down for many generations.
Buss was preceded in death by his wife LaVae and their two sons Kurt and Cary. Buss is survived by his two daughters: Evaun and Janeil, nine grandchildren: Star (Mark), Shane, Kurt, Joy, Glory, Noel (Paul), Kirsten, Chas (Brittney) and four great grandchildren: Kaitlin, Emily, Ashley, and Liam. Funeral services will be held on February 12, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Alta Loma, California. Internment will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary located at 3401 S Highland Drive Salt Lake City, Utah on February 16, 2020, at 2:00 p.m.
