

Dr Stuart Turkanis, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the School of Medicine and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Utah, died Thursday, November 10 of complications from a broken hip.
Stuart was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on December 15, 1936. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He received his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Utah under Dr. Louis S. Goodman and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Kings College London under Sir Bernard Katz. He then returned to the University of Utah, where he was a professor for over 30 years. In addition to conducting research, he taught pharmacology, physiology, and ophthalmology. In 2002 he received the Award for Distinguished Teaching from the College of Pharmacy.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Doebbeling, his brother Marvin Turkanis, his Sister Linda Engleman, and his children Jonathan Turkanis and Rebecca Turkanis.
He will remember for his dry wit, his devotion to his wife, and his love for his children. A graveside service will be held Monday, November 14, at Montefiore Cemetery, at 1081 E 400 N. The family asks that donations be sent to a charity of your choice.
