William Everett Hoggan, 81, passed away April 21, 2022, in Salt Lake City peacefully and surrounded by family. Born July 31, 1940, in Salt Lake City to Leona Everett and Melvin John Hoggan. He married his wife, Sarah Jean Hoggan in 1997.
Bill graduated from East High in 1958. He earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the U of U in 1964, then his Masters in Computer Science from the U of U two years later in 1966. He worked for the LDS Church in Acoustics then went on to work for Boeing, Sperry (Unysis) and eventually Weber State University where he taught Computer Science. Bill loved to learn. From a young age he worked with his father as an Electrician. He became a Certified Electrician and maintained his certification his whole life. He used this skill set to the very end and wired his Crowning Achievement….his Legacy….the ‘Mountain House.’
Bill enjoyed many things. He loved to ski. He taught skiing at Solitude while attending the U of U. He did fast pitch softball for 55 years! He was a youth soccer coach, a certified referee, and President of District 7 Youth Soccer. Besides soccer, he coached basketball and girls’ softball. He liked hunting deer and pheasant with his brother and later with his kids. He also liked fishing. He established the Cottonwood Community Council and was the chairman for 5 years. He worked to get Rodeo Lane to be a through street between Vine and 6400 South. In retirement, he enjoyed doing taxes for both H&R Block and Jackson-Hewitt.
Bill was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Aaronic Priesthood Quorum, the Elders Quorum as both president and counselor, and the High Priest Quorum as both Executive Secretary and Secretary. He served in Sunday School as both counselor and teacher, Ward Executive Secretary, Young Men’s 2nd counselor, Assistant Scout Master, and Ward Activity chairman. He served a 2-year mission to England where he gained an undeniable witness of the truthfulness of the gospel. The highlight of his church service was the call to be an Inner-City Missionary with his wife in the Second Ward, Liberty Stake, for 4 ½ years where he made life-long friendships.
His final contribution in life was his eye donation to the John A. Moran Eye Center for research in Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. His name will be etched on the Donor Monument Wall at the Salt Lake Library. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation in his name (William E. Hoggan).
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Melvin John; mother, Leona Everett; brother, Jack, and sister, Jilene. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Jean; children, Mandy Bowen (Bob), Amy (Rachel), Andrew (Melanie), Sandy (Liz), Rustin Nance (Nicole), Spencer Nance (Caryn), Stacey Nance, StevieAnn Nance, Wren Nance (Marcia), and 15 grandchildren.
There will be a viewing at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah, on Friday evening, April 29 from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the church, Saturday April 30 at 11 a.m. with a viewing held prior, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
