OBITUARY

Alexander Soto Cano

Born June 9, 1976

Alexander (Alex) Soto Cano, a 36-year-old San Angelo native, died Wednesday, June 13, near Knickerbocker, Texas, a place of importance to his family.

Cano had been an instructor of English writing at Jiao Tong University of Shanghai, China, a position he accepted in late 2010. Prior to living in Shanghai, he and his wife, Ivonne, lived in Madrid, Spain, for a year, where they both taught English. Cano was a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship for his work in Madrid. Prior to their time in Spain, Cano and his wife spent two years teaching English in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.

Cano held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Angelo State University. He graduated magna cum laude as an undergraduate. While pursuing his master’s degree, he was named “outstanding graduate student in liberal and fine arts.” While pursuing his master’s degree, Cano was an archivist with the West Texas Collection, serving as student archivist from August 2002 to August 2003, when he became University Archivist. The West Texas Collection is a special collection of the Porter Henderson Library of Angelo State University. In 2002 he won an award from the West Texas Historical Association for the best student paper of the year, and the paper was later published in the West Texas Historical Association Yearbook of 2003.

Cano was recently awarded a full fellowship to pursue a PhD in history at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. He was looking forward to returning to the U.S. to be closer to his family.

In addition to his wife, Ivonne, those surviving Alex include a sister, Adrienne Cano of Burlington, Vermont; his father, L. David Cano, of San Angelo; his mother, Janelle Yates, of Asheville, North Carolina; his grandmothers, Bernice Cano of San Angelo and Dorothy Yates Book, of Kingsland, Texas; paternal grandfather George Book of Kingsland; his aunts, Lucy Gutierrez of Grand Prairie; Rose Salcido of San Angelo; and Diana Yates of Urbana, Illinois; his uncles, Alex Cano of San Angelo; Kent Yates of Toledo, Washington; Modesto Gutierrez of Grand Prairie; Eddie Salcido of San Angelo; and a large extended family.

I was so sorry to hear of Alex passing away! I've thought about him fondly over the years, the way we hung out in the neighborhood and laughed 'til way too late. He will be missed. My heart goes out to his family!

Thank you all so much for your comments. It is a great comfort to read your words. The tremendous warmth of the Cano and Soto families has helped those most affected by this loss, and the words of former students, friends and family members reminds us that we are not alone in our grief. Thank you.

My deepest condolences go out to Alex's family and friends.I only met Alex through his lively and gracious emails when we corresponded about his hopes and plans for graduate school but he came highly recommended by all. He was excited and eager to begin his graduate career and I was so looking forward to working with him. It is clear he made a great impact on all around him and on his world while he could and he had much more to contribute. This is a terrible personal tragedy for his family and friends and a great loss, as well, to his profession. I am deeply saddened.

It is hard for me to face the fact that Alex has ended his earthly journey so aburptly at the prime time of his life! Alex promised me in an email on June 8th that he and his wife would come over for dinner before they leave for Nashville. At the UM-SJTU Joint Institute in Shanghai, Alex was a great teacher to the students who adored him, a model instructor to SJTU teachers who admired his teaching skills, a dedicated colleague generous with his time and talent to promote excellence in teaching and learning, and an easy-going, genuine, gentle person liked by all. We will miss you much! May the God of all comfort strengthen and sustain his dear wife and other family members at this time. Your sorrow and sense of loss are shared by all of us!

I just heard the sad news today. My prayers go out to Alex's wife, his Dad David and all the Cano family and extended family. I haven't seen Alex in over 15 years, but my Mom (Aunt Josie Soto) always spoke highly & proudly of him. I knew he was doing great. He was such a wonderful person that will be missed!

I'm so shocked to hear this from one of the JI staff, actually thought he got the wrong name. You were such a nice person and always ready to help others. Working as your TA for the past few semesters was such a great experience for me. Miss you and may god be with you! My deepest condolence for your family!
