Maya Angelou
Ardelia DeWitt Evans, 87 of San Angelo Texas transitioned, to her heavenly home Friday, July 7th 2023. She was born July 13th 1936 in Waelder Texas to Milton and Mary Lou DeWitt she was the second child born of ten children. Ardelia attended Blackshear and Carver elementary school. As a young girl she worked hard right beside her parents and could pull the weight of any adult when it came to work. Our grandparents referred to her as their right- hand man, she could do anything. Ardelia would meet and marry Jimmie Ned Evans, that union lasted over 40 yrs. Ardelia and Jimmie had one son, Dwayne A Evans, she adored him.
Now to say that was the end of her journey would certainly be a discredit to you all. Aunt Ardelia was a pilar of her family and community. Many can attest to her work ethic, grit and determination. She was truly one of a kind. Aunt Ardelia wore many hats with various employers, always landing a position of management. She worked for Ethicon, Levi Strauss, Baptist Lamar, Walmart, Girling Health Care, until she decided to private sit for seniors. In the later part of her employment not only did she make sure these seniors were taken care of, she would cook meals for their families while still cooking for her family during the holidays. Aunt Ardelia worked 2 jobs, while taking care of her parents, looking out for family. She made hard look easy yet she was the hardest worker we have ever known. The things she shared life lessons are embedded in our DNA. She said” always complete your task, never cut corners, be on time, take pride in all you do, inspire other to work, and my favorite never leave a job until you are sure you have another one. Through hard work she would say you can obtain or be anything, the ball is in your court. Stand tall and hold your head high, be confidant because being sure of yourself will get you through the door
Now you would think with all that work that she would be too tired for anything else, you would be wrong. Her first priority was God, she stayed in church. Auntie attended every meeting there was. While attending Greater St. Paul A.M.E, she was a trustee, church treasurer, an usher and taught Sunday school. Aunt Ardelia made sure we were vested in all things church. God was the head of her life. She carried her bible everywhere she went. Later her church home became Christian Fellowship Baptist Church, pastor Ronnie Hawkins Her second love was of family, she was so proud of us all. Auntie would go out of her way to make sure we were alright. So proud of the milestones and achievements made by her family. The way she honored her parents was a true testament of love. No one could hold a candle to her when it came to taking care of those she loved. She gave tough love only because she knew we could do better and only wanted us to put our best effort forward. She was also a member of the NAACP, she championed equality for all.
Aunt Ardelia you will always be remembered for your love of God and family, being a wonderful Mother / Grandmother, impeccable sense of style, being a humanitarian to all that knocked on your door, and the astute businesswoman that was self- made. But most of all we will always cherish you just how God made you, real class act!
