Barbara McWright

Barbara McWright, 82, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on August 13, 2026. Born July 10, 1944, Barbara will be remembered as a beloved and cherished presence—devoted in the truest sense, gentle in spirit, and steadfastly dedicated to the people entrusted to her care. Her life reflected quiet wisdom, honest strength, and a resilience that carried her through both joy and sorrow with grace.

Raised in a military family, Barbara moved often in her early childhood due to her father’s service in the Army and spoke little about those years. She did, however, fondly mention summer breaks spent at her aunt and uncle’s farm in the Rowena, Texas area, as well as her time at Warwick High School in Newport News, Virginia. Barbara ultimately graduated from Lake View High School in San Angelo on May 28, 1962.

In the fall of 1962, Barbara entered the Shannon School of Nursing alongside two friends, Bonny and Sharon. The three completed their studies and graduated as Registered Nurses in November 1965—an early reflection of Barbara’s enduring commitment to service and the steady, capable care that would define so much of her life.

After graduation, Barbara worked in the Shannon ER before being hired at General Telephone Electronics on Johnson Street in San Angelo as a company nurse. Over time, she advanced through the Human Resources department to the level of manager. Barbara and her husband retired on the same day in the spring of 1992. She maintained her nursing license until 2006. In retirement, her devotion only deepened as she poured her time and attention into her grandchildren and, later, her great-grandchildren—who were the love of her life. She also faithfully cared for her elderly mother for several years prior to her mother’s passing, a final, tender testament to the steadfast way Barbara showed up for those she loved.

Barbara found comfort and joy in the simple, meaningful routines of home. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed sewing and crafts, and took special care of the roses at her home north of San Angelo. In later years, one of her favorite pastimes was watching Hallmark Movies—quiet moments that suited her gentle nature and appreciation for warmth, family, and enduring love.

Barbara’s legacy is best understood through the way she spent her life taking care of others—especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family knew her as devoted, strong, and unwaveringly present, with a love that was both tender and fierce.

Barbara is preceded in death by her son, Douglas McWright. She is survived by her sons, Donnie McWright(Monica) of San Angelo; and David McWright(Paula) of Bronte. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Devon McWright of San Angelo; Shandi McWright of San Angelo; Skylar McWright-Brefo, married to Eric Brefo; Hunter Lane McWright; Cassidy McWright of San Angelo; and Zachary McWright of Bronte. Barbara is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Aubriella Brefo and Jax Brefo. The family would also like to include Angie and Vince Pointe.
