Buster was born December 8, 1927 in San Angelo during the years of the Great Depression. At nine years old, Buster worked on a sheep shearing crew that traveled all the way to Colorado and when he got home, he gave his wages to his mom. This began a lifelong commitment of working hard and giving his wages to his family.
At 13, Buster began working as a ranch hand herding cattle to El Paso, to the train, to be shipped to market. It was hard work and long hours and was truly his calling. Ranching became his lifelong career. Buster is one of the last of the TRUE working cowboys.
Buster joined the Navy in 1944 and served this Great Nation on a minesweeper, the “USS Nimble”. The ship would sweep the ocean for mines and cut them loose from the Moors and blow them up. Honorably discharged in 1947, Buster came back to San Angelo and married the love of his life, Marilyn Wood on April 5, 1948. Acquiring the position of Ranch Foreman of the Red Creek Ranch, some 43,000 acres was a life-long dream. There, Marilyn and he raised their four children. Buster touched us all with his no nonsense personality, strong working hands and loving heart.
In 1970, Buster worked with Dr. William Wohler DVM testing cattle for the Brucellosis program at Producers Livestock. Later in his retirement years, he enjoyed having his own cattle ranch in Robert Lee, Texas.
Whether herding cattle, serving in the Navy during the War, raising his family the RIGHT way, giving his time and love to every young man that he worked with, it simply was “NO HILL FOR A MOUNTAIN MAN!”
Buster was preceded in death by his loving son, Stacy Wayne Mohler. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; daughters Karen Petty and her husband Phil of Abilene: Tesa Whitley and her husband Johnny of Granbury; son, Jay Mohler and his wife Mary of San Angelo; Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and granddaughter: Zane Petty, Shae Jones, Stacy Jones, Kalyn Petty, Adam Mohler, Ryan Mohler, and Kelly Mohler.
Honorary Pallbearers are Ricky Lacy, David Rousche, Jerry Hudson, and Howard Cowan.
Buster was a member of the First Baptist Church in Miles, Texas.
